ABOUT US

A passion brought to life

JP Makes & Bakes was founded on a desire to bring Filipino flavors to Detroit, a city that didn’t have any Filipino eateries. We make everything from scratch, bringing you classic Filipino dishes, modern takes on Filipino favorites, and other fun treats.

Our new location in New Center is the product of hard work and community support, with contributions from Hatch Detroit and more.

We are proud to continue bringing the best Filipino flavors to Detroit and can’t wait to see you in our store.

As a young child with asthma, Jonathan would get bored of video games and venture into the kitchen to help his mom or grandma. He grew a knack for cooking and baking. By the time he was in high school, he was doing catering for friends. He always dreamed of having his own shop someday (he even wrote a business plan for his dream restaurant during an entrepreneurship class at school).

After a successful career of over 15 years in sales and marketing, Jonathan left corporate America to pursue his dream: baking. He attended the Academy of Pastry & Bakery Arts in the Philippines, honing his self-taught baking skills into professional perfection.

Upon returning to the States, Jonathan’s life was completely turned upside down. In 2020, he competed in Season 7 of the Holiday Baking Championship on the Food Network. He continued on to work as a pastry chef at Warda Patisserie, Tapped Coffee, Oak & Reel, and Le Supreme.

Now, Jonathan is making his ultimate dream a reality: Opening a store. Pulling from his Filipino heritage, he aspires to make and bake tasty treats for anyone and everyone.
